“Defensive tackle Zach Morgan scooped up a fumble on the 10-yard line and ran 92 yards for Barnstable High’s second score of the day, the longest fumble recovery return for a touchdown by a defensive lineman in school history and the longest fumble return as well.”

Keaton Bergal, Lou Cocozza, Jack Kennedy, and Chris Stiles Named 2016 Football Captains

Head Coach Chris Whidden announced this week that seniors Keaton Bergal, Jack Kennedy and Chris Stiles, along with junior Lou Cocozza, will serve as team captains of the 2016 Barnstable High School Red Raiders football team. These young men were voted to be this year’s team leaders through the overwhelming support of their teammates. Student leaders off the gridiron as well as on, Bergal, Cocozza, Kennedy and Stiles are also outstanding scholars. Together in football several years, our 2016 football captains share distinguished award winning football careers both as Barnstable Red Raiders and Barnstable Silver Bullets.

Captain Keaton Bergal (Proimage Photography)

Captain Keaton Bergal began his football career playing in the Barnstable Silver Bullets program for 6 years where he excelled both offensively and defensively. He was honored with the Michael Zikas Award as a BSB midget.  Entering his 4th year with the Barnstable Red Raiders, Keaton was awarded his varsity letter as a starter on both sides of the ball.  He has achieved the ‘700 Club’ as a Sophomore, ‘800 Club’ as a Junior, and ‘900 Club’ as a Senior which combines the weight of the deadlift, bench press and front-squat.  He was awarded the Joseph Borsari Award as a Junior which best exemplifies the level of dedication required to wear the Red and White.  Over the years, Keaton has been a consistent versatile player on several AAU baseball, and AAU basketball programs in Massachusetts.

Keaton, a High Honor Roll student with a weighted GPA of 4.56, is currently a member of the National Honor Society, Military Support Group, and Student Council.  He has also just completed his 2nd year College-level Internship with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League.  He is an active congregation member of First Lutheran Church, West Barnstable  and a volunteer for the Wheldon Memorial Library, West Barnstable Civic Association, and West Barnstable Historical Society. Upon graduation, Keaton will be attending Nursing School in New England to pursue his BSN degree.  is joined at home in West Barnstable by brothers Colton Thomas (BHS ’15; Football Captain ’15 / St. Anselm’s College of Nursing ’19) and Bryson Lee (BHS ’19).  Parents are Lee Ann and Tom.

Captain Lou Cocozza

Due to his outstanding play and demonstrated leadership, Captain Lou Cocozza has the highly unique and impressive honor of being voted overwhelmingly by his peers to be selected team captain as a junior.

Prior to joining the Red Raiders, Lou was a member of the Barnstable Silver Bullets for six years, excelling at the taxing offensive center position. He also impressed and continues to excel at long snaps. Lou was honored with the Michael S Zikas Award for the Most Valuable Player as a BSB Midget.  As a member of the 2015 Red Raider football team, Lou lettered as a sophomore after leading the charge throughout the year as starting center and long snapper.

A 2-year Iron Raider, Lou also achieved the ‘700 Club’ as a Sophomore and the ‘800 Club’ as a Junior, which combines the weight of the deadlift, bench press, and front squat. Lou is a three-sport athletic scholar.  Consistently an Honor Roll student, beyond football, Lou earned 3 varsity letters in wrestling to date and is a member of the baseball team.

Lou is the son of Kyle and Elaine Cocozza of Marstons Mills.

Captain Jack Kennedy (Proimage Photography)

Jack Kennedy, a Red Raider since 8th grade and two-year letterman, is an outstanding defensive end and left tackle. A versatile and powerful lineman, Jack also played left guard and defensive tackle sophomore year.  Let’s just say this. Jack is a STRONG man. He is a member of the BHS Half-ton, yes HALF TON, weightlifting club, which combines the weight of the deadlift, bench press, and front squat

Beyond Jack’s football accomplishments, Jack is a BHS Old Colony League baseball all-star, lettering every year since freshman year.  He also plays baseball for Team Cape Cod and played in the World Series in Ephrata, Washington this summer.

An excellent athletic scholar, Jack is a member of the BHS National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.

Jack’s older brother Chris is a former BHS Football Captain. His younger brother Max plays offensive and defensive lines for the BHS Freshmen team.  Jack’s proud parents are John and Stacey Kennedy of Marstons Mills.

An 11-year football veteran, Captain Chris Stiles began playing the game as a Barnstable Silver Bullet at age 7 and has not stopped since.  As a Silver Bullet, Stiles was a highly versatile player, excelling at many positions on both sides of the ball, including linemen, linebacker and running back.

As a Red Raider, last season Chris Stiles lettered as an outside linebacker. He also stepped up by filling in as a running back and played special teams. A two-year Iron Raider, Chris is a ‘700 Club’ member, which combines the weight of the deadlift, bench press, and front squat.  Chris is highly respected for his leadership skills on and off the field. Stiles has been a multi-season athlete since elementary. He has played soccer, basketball, football, and lacrosse, lettering in lacrosse last season as an LSM.

The Barnstable High School Red Raider Freshman Football Team started off the football season with a decisive WIN against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins Freshmen. The score??? An impressive 50 to 18!

BHS Red Raiders Head Football Coach Chris Whidden announced that 11 BHS football players are honored as 2016 Iron Raiders.

BHS Iron Raiders, young men who recognize that football is a year-round sport, completed a summer workout program that included an extensive series of speed, agility, and plyometric workouts twice weekly at Craigville Beach, as well as weight room workouts three times weekly.
